Lymphatic Drainage Massage
in Coleraine

Gentle, rhythmic work for when you feel heavy, puffy and sluggish and can't quite put your finger on why.

If you feel heavy, puffy or sluggish and can't quite put your finger on why, lymphatic drainage is one of the gentlest ways to get things moving again. It's the opposite of a deep tissue session. No elbows, no pressure you have to breathe through. Just slow, light, rhythmic work that follows the direction your lymph already wants to travel.

What it actually feels like

Lighter than you're expecting. The pressure is barely more than a stretch of the skin, because the lymphatic vessels sit just underneath it and pressing harder works against them rather than with them.

Most people find the rhythm almost hypnotic, and it's not unusual to drift off partway through. Afterwards you'll likely feel very relaxed, a bit dozy, and you'll need the loo more than usual for the rest of the day. That last one is a good sign.

Who it tends to help

  • After long travel or long days on your feet, when legs and ankles feel tight and swollen
  • After a hard training block, alongside or between deep tissue sessions
  • Through hormonal cycles, when you feel puffy and uncomfortable in your own skin
  • When you're run down or coming out the far side of a virus and everything feels heavy
  • If you're sat still for most of the day and circulation has gone quiet

Is it right for you?

I'd rather be straight with you about what I do and don't offer, because lymphatic work covers a lot of ground.

My training is in sports and remedial massage, and the lymphatic work I offer draws on that. It suits everyday heaviness and fluid retention well: after travel, after a hard training block, through hormonal cycles, or when you're coming back from being run down.

There are a few situations where you'd be better looked after by someone holding a specialist Manual Lymphatic Drainage qualification, and I'd rather send you their way than have you spend money with me first.

  • If you've been diagnosed with lymphoedema or lipoedema, or you've had lymph nodes removed, a certified MLD therapist is the right person for you. Your GP or consultant can point you towards one.
  • If you're recovering from cosmetic surgery and looking for post-operative drainage, that follows its own protocols and is best done by someone trained specifically in it.
  • If you're dealing with an active infection, a blood clot, or a heart or kidney condition, have a quick word with your doctor before booking anything. Not a no, just worth checking first.

If none of that sounds like you, you're in the right place. And if you're not sure, send me a message before you book and I'll tell you honestly either way.

Common Questions

Almost everything about it is different. A deep tissue massage works down into muscle to release tension. Lymphatic drainage works just under the skin, where the lymphatic vessels sit, using very light pressure and a slow repeated rhythm. If you have had a firm massage before and expect the same thing, the gentleness can catch you off guard for the first few minutes.

No. If it is hurting, it is not lymphatic drainage. The pressure is closer to a slow stretch of the skin than anything you would call deep. Most people find it so relaxing that they drift off partway through.

For everyday heaviness after travel, training or a run-down spell, one session is often enough to feel a noticeable difference, and people tend to come back when they need it rather than on a schedule. If it is something more persistent, I will give you an honest view after the first session. I am not going to sell you a course of ten.

Come in whatever is comfortable. For the areas being treated you will usually be down to your underwear, with towels and draping used throughout so you are covered the whole time apart from the area I am working on. If any of that is a worry, tell me when you book and we will work around it.

Yes, and it is a good pairing. Some people book deep tissue for the tight areas and lymphatic work for the heaviness, either in the same longer session or in alternate visits. Just say when you book and I will plan the time properly.

Not at the moment. Post-operative drainage, particularly after cosmetic surgery, follows its own protocols and is best done by someone trained specifically in that. If that is what you are looking for, I would rather tell you now than take the booking.
