Deep Tissue Massage
in Coleraine

Firm, slow work for the tension that's been sitting in your back or shoulders for weeks and isn't shifting on its own.

Book Deep Tissue

If something has been tight for weeks and stretching isn't touching it, deep tissue is usually where to start. It's slower and firmer than a standard massage, working down into the muscle and the fascia around it rather than gliding over the top. The point is finding the bit that's genuinely stuck and spending the time there. How much pressure you can stand doesn't really come into it.

What happens in a session

We start with a short chat about what's brought you in, what you've tried, and what you want out of the hour. I'll tell you what I'm planning before I start, and I'll check in as we go.

From there it's hands, forearms and thumbs working through the areas holding tension, at a pace the tissue can respond to. Push in too fast and it just braces. If it's the fascia that's stuck and not the muscle itself, I'll use myofascial release, which feels more like a slow sustained lean than a stroke.

You'll usually leave with a couple of stretches worth doing. A couple, not a printed programme.

Where it helps most

  • Shoulders and upper back that have set solid from desk work and driving
  • Low back tightness that comes back every few weeks no matter what you stretch
  • Legs after a training block, when everything feels short and heavy
  • Old niggles that never quite cleared and now flare when you push
  • Necks and hips that have stiffened up, where it's more about how far you can turn than how much it hurts

How firm is it?

Firmer than you'd get in a spa, and adjusted constantly. Some discomfort is normal, especially over a knot or something in spasm. Holding your breath isn't. If we get near that, I've gone too far and I'll ease off.

Tell me if it's too much. You'll get more out of the hour if you're not gritting your teeth through it.

Common Questions

There can be some discomfort over an area that's tight or in spasm, but it should never be unbearable. I work to your threshold and adjust as we go. If you're holding your breath, it's too much, and I'd rather you said so.

Sometimes, for a day or so, in the way you'd be after a good session in the gym. Keep moving gently and it settles. If you're ever sore for longer than that, tell me and I'll go lighter next time.

Honestly, less than the names suggest. Both work firmly into muscle, and I blend the two anyway. Deep tissue tends to be for tension that's built up over months at a desk. Sports massage tends to be for people training for something, or coming back from an injury. Book either and tell me what you're dealing with. I'll tailor it the same way.

For something specific that's been bothering you, weekly or fortnightly to start with, then spacing out as it settles. For general maintenance, once a month suits most people. I'll give you an honest view after the first session. I'm not going to sell you a course of ten.

Something loose and comfortable to arrive in. Depending on the area, you'll usually be down to your underwear on the table, with towels and draping used throughout so you're covered apart from the area I'm working on.

Yes. If an hour is more than you need, the 30-minute back, neck and shoulder session covers the tension most people come in with. Deep tissue itself starts at 60 minutes because the areas it suits take that long to do properly.
